Sustainability: Clean Water and Sanitation

On planet Earth, 71 percent of the world is covered by water and somehow we overlook it. At a closer look, only 1% of this water is clean and drinkable. For a planet home to nearly 8 billion people, that supply is low.

Goal 6 of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals is for clean water and sanitation for all. 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water, while 4.2 billion people lack safely managed sanitation (2017). By 2030, water scarcity could displace over 700 million people. That is a lot of people on the move from their home, let us see if they can stay.

With this in mind, goal 6 aims to strengthen the sustainable and integrated management of water resources. By 2030, availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all should be the norm. A difficult aim but one here at hococo we want to help reach.

Through open communication and planned initiatives in the community, a small change can be a big change. In Cape Town, South Africa ‘Day Zero’ was the name given when dams would run so low that taps would be turned off and collection points would be created. The population jumped into action and thankfully ‘Day Zero” never arrived. A community changed and the goal was met.

On average, 10 gallons of water is lost to leaks per day. A dripping faucet in every American household would cause a loss of 928 million gallons of water a day

Using our service, management of water and sanitation services can be improved. Communication with stakeholders involved in communities strengthened. Leaky pipes can be fixed and initiatives can be created for the communities at large. Starting from home, change can start.
